Everyone loves the feeling of a soft rug under their feet as they get out of bed, but carpets can get dirty or stained pretty quickly. Whether you spilled red wine or coffee on your carpet or just need a few tips on how to clean the floors in your apartment more efficiently, we’ve got you covered! Check out these three carpet cleaning hacks that every apartment renter should know.
Treat Stains Immediately
This isn’t a revolutionary hack, but it’s worth including! No matter the cause of the stain, you’ll have better luck removing it if you treat it immediately, rather than letting it set. A crucial tip to keep in mind is to blot the area rather than rub it. A clean cloth or paper towel should absorb a decent amount of the liquid if you treat it quickly. If the stain is stubborn, dilute the spot on your carpet by pouring a splash of water or club soda and continue blotting. You may also need the scrub the area with soapy water if it isn’t completely coming out.
If you happen to delay your cleaning of a stain, start by blotting the spot with paper towels. Then sprinkle salt on the spot to absorb any remaining liquid, and vacuum the salt after a while. Continue with the above cleaning methods to remove the stain completely.
DIY Deodorizer
If you are looking for a way to make your carpets smell fresh just in time for spring, try this tip for making your own deodorizer. Add about 10-20 drops of any essential oil you like with a 16-ounce box of baking soda. Mix up the mixture in a glass container until the oils are completely absorbed. To use your deodorizer, simply shake some of the scented baking soda on your carpet, wait five minutes, then vacuum it up to leave your carpet with a fresh, clean scent.
Carpet Cleaner
In addition to removing stains and making your carpet smell clean, it’s important to give your floors a deep clean now and then to get rid of any allergens and dust mites. You can buy a liquid chemical cleaner, but it’s just as easy to make your own non-toxic cleaner to use with your carpet-cleaning extractor. Mix ¾ cup of Hydrogen Peroxide, ¼ cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of dish soap, five drops of essential oils, two tablespoons of fabric softener, and one gallon of hot water. Use this in your carpet cleaning machine to ensure your floors are clean and allergen-free!
