Once the sun goes down, close your blinds. By closing your blinds, you keep heat from escaping through the window. Winter is notorious for causing warm air to seep from your windows. To stop that, line your window with dish towels or old rags.
Use Throw Blankets and Sweaters
To make a cold home feel warm, layer up. Multiple layers of socks, sweaters, and pants will keep you toasty no matter the temperature. Wear knee-high socks with your leggings, invest in some long johns. Get thin gloves to wear inside your thicker mittens this winter. Throw blankets are a beautiful accessory in many rooms. Use this to your advantage by buying blankets that match your couch or drapes. You can also create woven blankets that will give your home a cozy feeling that outlasts the winter season.
Keep Your Thermostat Set to Auto
The “auto” function will only turn at the temperature you set it at. Setting the temperature to 71 will save you a significant amount in the winter. Generally, 72 degrees is regarded as room temperature. Depending on how cold you get, you can lower your auto setting to what you are comfortable with. Saving a few dollars may not be worth freezing your butt off. If you ever smell gas or there is no change in temperature after a few hours of the heat being on, call maintenance and leave. Don’t forget your coat!
