Fireworks, street fairs, and flags seem to be the symbol of the Fourth of July. But did you know that every year, one-quarter of the emergency room visits are related to firework injuries? Because fireworks are sold on almost every street corner, it is important for everyone to know some basic firework safety tips. Let’s take a look at some safety tips.
Firework Safety Tips
There are a lot of different types of fireworks you could light off during the Fourth. But even the legal fireworks you can buy at the local store can pose a danger to you and your family. Did you know that sparklers burn 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit? This is hotter than wood burns and glass melts. It is important to keep fireworks away from children or to watch them carefully. Once the firework is extinguished, soak them in a bucket of water and place them in a metal trash can away from any combustible materials and away from your building. Light each firework separately before backing away to a safe distance. Never point fireworks at others or at buildings. Make sure to obey all of your local laws and to read all of the cautionary labels before igniting each firework.
Cookout Safety Tips
In 2014, 16,600 people were admitted to the emergency rooms due to injuries involving grills. July is actually the peak month for grill fires, which cause both structure and outdoor fires. Gas grills contribute to a higher number of home fires than other grill types. Before using your grill, it is important to clean the grill thoroughly as the buildup could start a fire. Never leave a grill unattended and remember to keep your grill away from decorations and structures of any sort. Keep a spray bottle of water and a fire extinguisher near your grill to avoid flare-ups and out-of-control fires. Be sure not to overload your grill and to make sure your grill has the proper ventilation to avoid a fire or an explosion.
