Whether you are striking out on your own for the first time or you are looking for a new place at the end of your lease, there are always things you should be looking for in a new luxury apartment. Before signing your lease, check out this list of things you should be looking for when apartment hunting!
Do Your Research
It is important to do your research online and in person when looking for a new apartment. Check out the apartment reviews on social media, making sure to take these reviews with a “grain of salt.” These reviews can help you get an idea of how long it takes management to fix things as well as other issues about the property itself. Check the commutes to work or school before visiting to see if it is possible for you to commute. Also check out the neighborhood to ensure it has everything you want and is safe. It gets later in the year, it starts to get dark earlier so you may have to walk from a restaurant or your car to your apartment. Make sure it is safe to walk alone at night.
Does It Work?
Most apartments have at least some appliances in them. The basics include a refrigerator and an over/stove. Make sure these work during your initial walkthrough. Most of us have tons of electronics that require an outlet, so make sure the plugs work by plugging something in. This will help you determine where you can place furniture as well as the electronics. If you have three-pronged plugs, make sure at least some outlets have space for them or be willing to buy adapters for them. Also ask about the laundry facility and other amenities in the complex. Ask who to direct your complaints as well as maintenance requests to so you can expedite the requests.
The Lease
This is one thing most tenants, especially first time renters may not look at in depth. Most people trust their landlord and will sign based on what they go over with them. But it is always a good idea to read the lease to look for misunderstandings, rent increases, as well as other financial information should always be clarified before signing the lease. Many apartment landlords will lease an apartment anywhere from a year to a month-to-month. Some leases can be negotiated up to two years if you have impeccable references and the full deposit. Another question you should ask is about the deposit. Is it only first month’s rent or do they require last month’s rent as well. Are there rental late fees? Can you break you lease early without losing the deposit and how many months’ notice is acceptable before moving out?
These questions and tests will help you determine if this luxury apartment is right for you or if you should continue your search. Do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions before signing the lease.
