Moving into your first apartment is exciting, but also daunting. There is a lot to do starting from before you move and it’ll continue for a while after as you settle in. Amidst the mayhem, there are some tips you can employ to make your first move a lot easier.
Focus on Furniture
Think about the furniture you already have and make a list of what you’ll need in your first apartment to make it functional and comfortable. Consider watching for sales or buying second-hand to save some money. Furniture can be expensive, so you’ll likely have to space out your purchases. Take note of the most important pieces you need and get those first.
Build Your Bed
The first thing you should do the day you move in is build your bed. You might be so excited that you think you’ll have no problem hauling boxes all day, but you’ll be exhausted before the end of it. This is especially true if you live on a second or third floor. You’ll be glad the bed is ready when all the boxes are in and you need somewhere to crash.
Greet Your Neighbors
Exchange a friendly hello with any neighbors you see. This is especially important if you meet a neighbor that shares a wall with you or is right across the hall. Your neighbors can be your allies, so making a good first impression is imperative to a comfortable stay in your first apartment.
Don’t Forget the Little Things
When you first start living on your own, a lot of little things will likely be forgotten or overlooked amongst all the big things. Don’t forget cleaners for your bathroom, kitchen, and glass, and be sure to have an all-purpose cleaner handy. Have at least one flashlight and have backup batteries for it. Buy extra batteries in common sizes such as AA and AAA so they’re there when you need them. Get stationery of some kind so you have something to write on. Think carefully about things you use regularly and try to make sure all those little things make it into your apartment so you’re ready for anything.
